The Lower Dess estate lies in Royal Deeside on the north side of the river Dee with uninterrupted views over the valley to the Forest of Birse. The estate enjoys a very private and secluded position in a totally unspoilt rural setting and yet is close to Aberdeen.
The 428 acre estate was purchased in 2011 by Jeremy and Jenny Clayton who, in becoming Scottish landowners, were fulfilling a life-long dream. Influenced by generations of sportsmen, this Hertfordshire couple were delighted to find themselves owners of some of the best spring fishing in the UK with 2.25 miles of beat fishing across 16 named pools offering excellent sea trout in June and August.
Since buying the estate, the Clayton family have carefully and accurately restored much of the estate to its full potential. This renovation programme has culminated in the complete transformation of an old farm steading into the most luxurious of lodges offering guests an unparalleled opportunity to enjoy top end comfort, cuisine and service in a charming and relaxed environment.
Mill of Dess Lodge is the perfect Exclusive Use venue for groups of friends or family, special celebrations, wedding parties and small gatherings. The stunning dining room and stylish sitting room both have wood burning stoves; there is plenty of space to socialise, unwind and relax. Outside, there’s a seating area with a firepit to enjoy special evenings in the garden.
To make your stay as enjoyable as possible a full Scottish breakfast and dinner are included, prepared by the Lodge’s own Chef Manager in our professional kitchen installed as part of the conversion. We are happy to accommodate any dietary requirements/intolerances and such prerequisites can be discussed and planned in advance of your stay. We are a ‘Bring Your Own’ alcohol establishment with no corkage charges and all the bedrooms have their own tea/coffee making facilities.
The Chef Manager is also the first point of contact for guests on all domestic issues and will do everything to accommodate your needs. For particularly large parties, or where additional assistance is temporarily required, we have access to experienced staff who are happy to help as needed. The grounds and garden are well maintained ensuring the Lodge always looks its best.
On the banks of the river there is also the more informal Mill Cottage. Two twin bedrooms, fully equipped self catering kitchen and the all important rod room, this is perfect for those looking for a more independent holiday and is especially popular with fishermen.
